Salthouse, Weiss take Cozumel 70.3

Ellie Salthouse edged Svenja Thoes by 1:32 and Michael Weiss topped Tyler Butterfield by 2:11 to win Ironman 70.3 Cozumel.
Salthouse combined a women’s second-best 24:21 swim, a 5th-quickest 2:22:54 bike split and a women’s-best 1:224:28 half marathon to finish in 4:15:12 with a 1:32 margin of victory over Svenja Thoes of Germany and 10 minutes over 3rd place Angela Naeth of Canada.
Salthouse’s win adds to her 2018 highlights which have included 2nd at Pucon 70.3, 4th at Dubai 70.3, a win at Boulder 70.3, and 8th place at the Ironman 70.3 World Championship.
Michael Weiss overcame an out-of-the-top-10 23:36 swim that put him 2:15 behind the swim leader, a dominating 2:00:52 bike split that was 3:09 better than the next-best effort, and a 2nd-best 1:18:51 run split that brought him to the finish in 3:47:14 with a 2:11 margin of victory over Tyler Butterfield of Bermuda and 5:19 over 3rd place Alan Carillo Avila of Mexico.
The win adds to Weiss’s strong results in 2018 which include wins at Ironman Austria, Zell Am See 70.3, and St. Polten 70.3, 2nd at Ironman 70.3 Texas, and 9th at Ironman 70.3 Worlds.
