Sanders, Kattouf win AG Du Nationals
Lionel Sanders of Canada and Gail Kattouf of Greenville, South Carolina won the overall titles at the USA Triathlon Duathlon age group Nationals standard distance event Saturday in Oso Valley, Arizona.
Sanders won overall and the 20-24 category wire-to-wire with a race-best 15:34 for the 5k run, a third-best 48:30 for the 35k bike and a race-best 16:28 for the closing 5k run to break the tape in 1:22:54 with a 12 seconds margin of victory over 25-29 winner and overall runner-up Patrick Parish of Bloomington Indiana.
Because Sanders is a Canadian citizen, Parish won the overall national U.S. men's duathlon title by a 2:48 margin over U.S. overall runner-up and men's 35-39 champion Matthew Payne, who was third overall. Last year's U.S. National overall men's champion Dave Slavinski of Point Pleasant, New Jersey finished 8 seconds behind Payne in 4th overall, third American, and first in 40-44.
"I knew a few people would take it out hard," Parish told USAT media.. "I just wanted to relax through the first run, and catch everybody on the bike and see if I could close." Parish posted a 49:03 bike split.
Defending champion Kattouf won the women's overall crown and the 35-39 category with a women's race-best 9:02 5k run, a 55:23 35k bike and a 20:51 closing 5k run to cross the line in 1:37:00 with a 2 minutes, 40 seconds margin on overall runner-up and 45-49 winner Kirsten Chapman of Edmond, Oklahoma. Ellen Hart of Denver, Colorado finished 33 seconds later, won the 50-54 age group, and took 3rd overall.
"Today I left it all out on the course," Kattouf told USAT media representatives. "I knew going into transition I had a couple minutes lead, and then I cruised on the run."
In addition to her 2011 national title, Kattouf won the 2011 ITU World Duathlon age group crown and plans to defend that title later this year in Nancy, France.
