Smales, Pallant top Staffordshire 70.3
Elliot Smales and Emma Pallant take top honors at Ironman 70.3 Staffordshire.
Smales combined a race-best 23:51 swim, a second-fastest 2:14:36 bike split, and second quickest 1:16:02 half marathon to finish in 3:59:23 with a 2:13 margin of victory over fellow Brit George Goodwin and 2:23 over 3rd place finisher Bryan McCrystal of Ireland.
Pallant, who dominated three weeks ago at Ironman 70.3 Barcelona, stayed in touch with a women’s 3rd-best 26:33 swim that left her with a 57 second deficit, and a women’s 2nd-fastest 2:27:25 bike split that left her with a 7 seconds deficit at T2. Pallant then unleashed the beast within by virtue of a sizzling fast 1:17:42 run – tied for 4th overall including the men. She finished in 4:16:54 which gave her an 8:08 margin of victory over Nikki Bartlett and 12:57 over 3rd place Fenella Langridge, which created a 1-2-3 sweep by British women.
