Sofie Goos stabbed while training
Belgian triathlete Sofie Goos was stabbed in the back while on a training run in a park in Antwerp reported the Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws. Goos who races for the BMC-Etixx Pro Triathlon Team reportedly lost a lot of blood and even chased after the perpetrator after she realized what had happened. She is now is in the intensive care unit at the ZNA Stuivenberg Hospital where she is being treated for a kidney injury and the blood loss.
"I was stabbed by an unknown man … without reason, cause or motive … stabbed in the lower back and lost a lot of blood …" posted Goos on Facebook last night.
Police have arrested a 26-year old man from Antwerp who is charged with attempted murder according to Het Laatste Nieuws.
Triathletes around the world were shocked when they learned about the stabbing.
"Much strength and speedy recovery @sofiegoos after this terrible news" tweeted 2013 Ironman World Champion Frederik Van Lierde.
The BMC-Etixx Pro Triathlon Team powered by Uplace also was stunned.
"On Monday morning, the treating doctors with our team doctor present, evaluated the medical condition of Sofie Goos. We can confirm that Sofie Goos was hit in the right kidney. Sofie is continuously monitored in the intensive care unit of the Stuivenberg Hospital in Antwerp. She is being monitored and evaluated continuously. As indicated earlier, it is impossible to make predictions right now about the period of the recovery process. All our thoughts continue to be with Sofie, her partner and family. We wish them enormous strength in these difficult times," said a team statement.
