Swimrun in the USA
A full length feature from 360 Media Ventures is set to air on World of Adventure TV on October 6th.
Set amidst the Casco Bay Islands in Portland, Maine, racers were tested with nearly 12 miles of run legs across varied island terrain and 4 miles of open water swimming.
For 2017, Casco Bay Islands Swimrun will include a Long Course event of approximately 6 miles of open water swimming and 16 miles of running over 12 islands. A simultaneous Short Course event will consist of approximately 2 miles of swimming and 6.5 miles of running over 4 islands.
Remaining true to the originators of the ÖTILLÖ, Casco Bay Islands Swimrun is a two-person team event. Not a relay, teammates race the entire course together. Rules permit swim aids such as hand paddles, pull buoys, wetsuits and even swim fins to name a few. Certain safety gear is mandated by race rules and hydration and race fuel can be carried too, but what one starts with, so too must they finish. Changing from trail shoes to swim fins, or tending to awkward gear can chew up valuable time. Having the right teammate and equipment can make all the difference.
Casco Bay Islands Swimrun is set for August 13, 2017. Applications are being accepted until November 7th at which time team selection will be made and announced on December 1st.
Other Swimrun events coming up in the US this year include:
Swim-Run-VA: Richmond, VA, Oct. 15th
Swimrun NC: Danbury, NC, Oct. 30th
California Swimrun: San Diego, CA, Oct. 30th
ÖTILLÖ ('Island to Island' in Swedish) is the Swimrun World Championship and takes place in Sweden in the Stockholm Archipelago on Labor Day each year. 2017 will be the 12th running of what CNN ranked as 'one of the toughest endurance challenges in the world'. Entry is only available to 110 teams based on qualification, lottery selection or merit based application. Teams tackle 75 total kilometers, 10km of open water swimming and 65km of trail running over 26 separate islands.
