The Weekend Box Feb 15 2015
While there were no big prestigious contests this weekend in the triathlon world, there was pavement action in South Africa, New Zealand and Argentina as well as a snowy contest in Finland. Of note in track and field, an American broke an Irishman’s 20-year-old world record for the plus-40 crowd at a classic meet in New York City. And we fancied several Valentine’s Day messages from triathletes on social media.

Bernard Lagat shatters Eamonn Coghlan’s master’s mile record at Millrose Games
Saturday during the famed Wanamaker indoor mile at the 108th Millrose Games in New York City, Bernard Lagat of the United States crushed the master’s mile world record set in 1994 by Eamonn Coghlan of Ireland. Lagat, who is 40 years old, ran 3:54.91, topping Coghlan’s mark of 3:58.15 set 20 years ago on the indoor track at Harvard University.
Lagat, who broke Coghlan’s Wanamaker Mile record of 7 overall wins with 8 victories at the classic New York City indoor track facility a while ago, finished 4th overall behind Matthew Centrowitz, who won this year’s title in a time of 3:51.91, holding off Nick Willis by .11 of a second.

“Happy Valentine’s Day to the love of my life @kzaferes6! I didn’t believe on love until I met Katie. It’s incredible the feeling you get when you meet the girl of your dreams. When you come across ‘the one’ there won’t be any doubt in your mind! I love you Mrs. Zaferes!” – Tommy Zaferes
“My dad is sweet to the single ladies at work for Valentine’s Day. Nice bouquet of flowers” – XLab COO Candice Turner, referring to her father, XLab founder and chief designer Craig Turner
“Happy Valentine’s Day to the love of my life my inspiration @ambergarcia76” – Pete Coulson
“Psyche Revived by Cupid’s Kiss by Antonio Canova. A neo-classical sculpture of Cupid bringing Psyche back to life with a tender kiss and caress after she had opened a sacred jar said to contain the treasure of divine beauty, but actually contained the Sleep of Innermost Darkness, an everlasting state of despair and loneliness. Like all relationships, the story is a bit more complicated than that, but on Valentine’s day, that version will suffice.” – Tom Demerly
“The real deal, I would say, too cute.” – Flick Boucher
“Happy Valentine’s Day” – Ardis Bow, 1983 and 1985 Ultraman winner and 1984 Wildflower winner
“Happy Valentine’s Day!!” – Jamie Whitmore to her husband, Courtney Cardenas
