Tutukin, Densham in Holten
Ivan Tutukin won the 2010 Holten ITU Triathlon World Cup and narrowly held off fellow Russian Yulian Malyshev and Portuguese Pro Joao Pereira. Aussie Erin Densham grabbed the women's title with a slightly more comfortable margin.
The men
After a quick swim in Lake Domelaar, the men were led out of the first transition by Frenchman Aurelien Raphael, who had won the Brasschaat Premium European Cup in Belgium two weeks ago.
Very warm conditions greeted the athletes as they headed out on their bikes and not content to wait for the run, Aussie Brendan Sexton broke away from the field during the third lap, and was joined by teammate Joshua Amberger on the fifth and final lap. By the time the Aussies hit T2 their lead was 23 seconds.
During the run through downtown Holten the Russian duo of Tutukin and Malyshev charged through the field and battled it out with an amazing sprint at the end with Joao Pereira and Brice Daubord. Tutukin held off Malyshev by a couple of seconds to take the win in 1:54:21 and Pereira of grabbed third one more second second behind Malyshev. Daubord missed out on the podium with his 4th place.
The women
Not surprisingly American Hayley Peirsol set the pace during the swim in the women's race and had a 45 second lead as she left T1.
The attempt to get away from the pack on the bike was in vain and after 8k she was caught. Soon after a group 18 women managed to get clear from the other competitors and reached transition with a one minute margin.
Once out on the run Erin Densham charged into the lead and slowly distanced all other competitors. She crossed the line first, 37 seconds ahead of runner-up Anna Maria Mazzetti of Italy and 1:38 ahead of third placed Radka Vodickova of the Czech Republic.
