Vidal, McIlroy win Kinloch Sprint

Laurent Vidal of France and Kate McIlroy of New Zealand won the elite titles at the ITU Sprint Triathlon Oceania Cup in Kinloch, New Zealand Saturday.

Vidal combined a 3rd-best 9:54 swim, 5th-fastest 33:23 bike split and race-best 13:55 run to finish in 57:55 with a 14 seconds margin of victory over runner-up Ryan Sissons of New Zealand and 54 seconds lead over 3rd-place finisher Benjamin Shaw of Ireland.

Vidal, 28, who finished 5th at the 2012 London Olympic Men’s Triathlon and 4th at the 2012 ITU World Triathlon Series event in Yokohama, currently splits his training between the south of France and New Zealand.

McIlroy posted the 5th-fastest 10:03 swim, then walloped the next-best competitor by 1:11 with a race-best 35:50 bike split, and put the race away with a 2nd-fastest 16:28 run to finish in 1:03:01 with a 21:51 margin of victory over Sophie Corbridge and 3 minutes flat over 3rd-place Mikayla Nielsen for an all-Kiwi podium.

McIlroy finished 10th at the 2012 London Olympic Women’s Triathlon and 8th at the 2012 ITU World Triathlon Grand Final in Auckland.
