Wilkowiecki, Diederiks Victorious at Poznan 70.3

Robert Wilkowiecki, coming off a win at Ironman 70.3 Warsaw in June, edged fellow Pole Kacper Stepniak to delight a home country crowd at Poznan 70.3. Diede Diederiks of Netherlands used a women’s-best 1:21:48 half marathon to run away to a 1:26 margin of victory over Anne Reischmann of Germany.

Men’s Race Recap

Stepniak led the men’s swim wave, followed closely by Menno Koolhaas of Netherlands, with Wilowiecki just one second later. Wilkowiecki led from T1 to T2, where Stepniak trailed by one second and both home country stars set out on the run together.

Stepniak led early on the run, but Wilkowiecki proved the stronger on the back half of the run. Wilkowiecki surged ahead on his way to a race-best 1:12:18 half marathon split that brought him to the line in 3:43:27 with a 1:12 margin on Stepniak and 3:34 over third place finisher Henrik Goesch of Finland.

Women’s Race Recap

In the women’s race, Lotte Lucas of the United Arab Emirates and Hana Kolarova of the Czech Republic tied for the swim lead with a 27:09 split. That gave them a 1-second margin on Rosie Weston of Great Britain, 2:14 on Diede Diederiks, and 2:16 on Susie Cheetham of Great Britain.

Lucas led the field halfway through the bike leg, but was soon overcome by Anne Reischmann, whose women’s-fastest 2:14:29 bike split gave her a 33 seconds lead on Diederiks and 3:54 over Lucas.

On the run, Diederiks kept her cool and progressed into the lead. Diederiks kept the gas on her way to a women’s-best 1:21:48 half marathon and a 4:10:07 finish with a 1:26 margin on Reischmann and 9:01 over third place finisher Lucas.
