Wilson, Swallow take Tongyeong

Australia’s Dan Wilson and Great Britain’s Jodie Swallow both earned their first career ITU World Cup titles Saturday in Tongyeong, South Korea.

Wilson overcame a 40-second deficit after the bike with a dominating 31:26 10k run to win the final ITU World Cup of the season at Tongyeong. Great Britain’s Jodie Swallow, who already owns the 2009 ITU long course world title, took her first ITU World Cup win at Tongyeong with a stellar bike breakaway that gave her a comfortable margin over three-time Olympian veteran Anja Dittmer of Germany and Ainhoa Murua of Spain.

Wilson finished in 1:49:36, followed 16 seconds later by Aurelien Raphael of France, a former ITU World Junior champion. The battle for third was a doozy, with fellow French former ITU World Junior Champion Vincent Luis prevailing in 1:49:57, with Czech Republic competitors Jan Celustka (4th) and Premysl Svarc (5th) and Min Ho Heo of South Korea (6th) all finishing two seconds later.

Mark Fretta was top American in 16th place in 1:51:21, with Timothy O’Donnell, who cheered on girlfriend Mirinda Carfrae to a Kona victory a week ago, taking 17th in 1:51:27. Nicholas Vandam (44thin 1:54:01) and James Bales (56th in 2:01:33) rounded out the American men finishers.

Swallow basically won wire-to-wire as she emerged from a chilly wetsuit swim first, followed by Radka Vodickova and Neiske Becks hot on her heels. On the very first lap, Swallow made a daring solo breakaway and held firm to a minute and a half margin by the end of the 40k bike.

Quickly Carole Peon of France, Anja Dittmer and Ainhoa Murua became the prime chasers, but none could challenge Swallow who held on for the win. Halfway, Peon dropped back with Achilles troubles and Dittmer pulled away on the final lap to take the 18th World Cup medal of her career. Murua took the bronze for her very first ITU World Cup podium.

“It’s amazing,” Swallow told ITU media. “I wasn’t really expecting it.”
